Is Fraud Getting Easier To Detect?
Fraud takes no time at all. It took just two minutes for hackers to breach a hospital’s network and deploy ransomware recently. It is hard to ignore the recent increase in reporting of hospitals victimized by ransomware. Becker’s Health IT brought this alarming news to our attention in their article, “Hackers gained access, deployed ransomware in just 2 minutes, Indiana health system says.”
Ransomware is a form of malware that encrypts a victim’s files. The attacker then demands a ransom from the victim to restore access to the data upon payment. Users are typically shown instructions for how to pay a fee to get the decryption key.
The health system has not received any requests for ransom yet and system’s IT team is preparing for the possibility of having to rebuild the entire system.
The impact of ransomware attacks is being felt across the healthcare industry.
