Health Data Access
With the daily news sharing stories of data breaches and cyber attacks, everyone is worried about their personal information being sold, stolen or otherwise abused. Health data seems to be the target of more nefarious acts of cyber crime than other industries. The Watertown Daily Times brought this news to us in their article, “Wisconsin at center of looming federal battle over health records.”
Everyone has a role to play in the privacy and security of electronic health information. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has proposed new guidelines that would change how medical records are shared by creating an app-based marketplace around patient data.
The process started several years ago with the goal of individuals easily accessing electronic health records (EHRs) through third-party smartphone applications. That would be a major change in how integrated health records systems have been built, managed and secured over time.
