From a Distance

Due to busy lifestyles and advances in technology, remote patient monitoring is on the rise. However, the challenges to bringing outside data into existing electronic health records (EHRs) are not to be ignored. Healthcare IT News brought this information to us in their article,”Integrating device data with EHRs requires focus on governance, privacy.”

Data integrity is at stake. It is important for information management professionals to appropriately determine the details of when and how real-time device data is streamed in the EHR system. To maintain the integrity of the data, it is just as important to be able to trace the information back to the point of collection. Some of that challenge will be solved by technology as EHR systems evolve to accommodate the new imperatives of telemedicine. But health information management (HIM) professionals will always be part of the process of ensuring that remote health data is helping provide better care while maintaining the integrity of data.
